My sister and I drove through the Kaibab Indian Reservation in Southern Utah/Northern Arizona and I was struck by how vast the land was and how few people lived there. I researched the reservation and realized how poor the people are that live in this wide open ancient place. I saw this trailer and knew I had to paint my feelings about this beautiful and brutal land. I felt very close to the ancient spirits that surrounded us. We are part Cherokee, albeit a small amount, but my Grandfather's stories about growing up in an Indian town in Oklahoma have always resonated with my soul. This Sage Brush Home struck me as the epitome of the poverty that our Native Americans must deal with every day...and yet it looks so peaceful.
