This painting depicts the drama and tragedy of the massacre of the Warm Springs Apache by Mexican soldiers at Tres Castillos in 1880. Siri Toklanni cannot outrun the pursuing Mexican soldiers with little Chenleh, so offers her to Apache warrior and kinsman, Eclode, hoping they both escape to safety. Sadly, neither was ever seen again. Siki Toklanni was captured, taken to Chihuahua Mexico and sold as a slave to a wealthy family in Mexico City. After five years she managed to escape. Using skills that all Apache children are taught, overcoming great obstacles and moving at night for two years, she finally rejoined her Apache tribe.
