Peloncillo Mountain Jaguar
"That's a Jaguar!" a stunned Warner Glenn exclaimed. In March of 1996, while riding the rugged, wide-open border country of SE Arizona, a wild jaguar appeared on a bluff above him. Realizing this as a very rare encounter, this fourth-generation rancher scrambled back to his mule and grabbed a camera from a saddle horn pouch. Warner's hounds were baying frantically while the jaguar roared. Warner came within several feet when the big cat exploded out of the chute. "He was coming to get me!" when two of his hounds met the jaguar head-on saving Warner from "having my lap full of biting, clawing jaguar". My research for this painting involved staying with the Glenn family at Malpas Ranch, and saddling up a mule for a ride to the bluff where the cat was first seen. As an artist, I wanted to illustrate the exact moment when Warner realized he had spotted a jaguar.
